SBDC Professionals Highlighted in Guam Business Journal’s 40 Under Forty

Three professionals from the CNMI Small Business Development Center at Northern Marianas College were recently highlighted in Guam Business Journal (GBJ)’s 40 Under Forty, a competitive list of young leaders selected amongst a diverse group from across the region. CNMI SBDC’s Charlene M. Ogo, Mercilynn K. Palec, and Roman M. Tudela were included in their fourth edition and were recognized and acknowledged at GBJ’s 40 Under Forty Gala.

Charlene M. Ogo currently serves as the Director and Business Advisor for the CNMI SBDC in Rota. Ogo holds a Bachelor’s in Health Administration and a Master’s of Business Administration, which provide a strong foundation for her role at the Rota SBDC. As a former owner of Bake Me Happy, she gained valuable entrepreneurial experience that led her to establish Sweet7Oh! on Saipan, offering custom catering services. Her educational background and business ventures reflect her commitment to community growth and economic development in the CNMI.

Mercilynn K. Palec serves as the Associate Network Director for the CNMI SBDC. Palec holds a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Northern Marianas College and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Guam. She combines her academic background with a passion for community service, volunteering with the NMI Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence and serving as Chairwoman for the NMI Girl Scouts. Alongside her daughter, Mercilynn operates a small business creating handmade hair accessories, reflecting her dedication to local artistry. Her diverse pursuits reflect her mission to inspire creativity and growth within her family and community.

Roman M. Tudela is the Marketing Manager for the CNMI SBDC, and was also recently recognized in the national 2024 SBDC 40 under 40 as well as the 2024 CNMI SBDC Network State Star recipient. Tudela graduated with an Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration with an Accounting Emphasis and a Bachelors of Science in Business Management from Northern Marianas College and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Texas Permian Basin. As President of both the SHRM CNMI Chapter and the Northern Marianas College Alumni Association, Roman advocates for professional growth and community involvement. His early experiences at his grandfather’s general store in Saipan sparked a lifelong commitment to supporting local businesses and economic development.

“We are proud to see Charlene, Mercilynn, and Roman— great members of our Proa Tribe— recognized as three of Guam Business Journal’s 40 under Forty,” said NMC President Galvin Deleon Guerrero, EdD.

“This recognition highlights not only their achievements and leadership but also their commitment to excellence and service for businesses within the community.“

The recognition of CNMI SBDC and its representatives in Guam Business Magazine’s 40 Under 40 is a testament to their relentless commitment and heartfelt dedication to the small business community in the Northern Mariana Islands. This achievement reflects the countless hours they’ve invested in guiding entrepreneurs through both opportunities and challenges, and it symbolizes the impact of their efforts on local economic growth and resilience. By equipping small business owners with the tools to succeed—from essential skills training to navigating complex funding landscapes—these young leaders are building a stronger, more self-reliant community. Their acknowledgment not only celebrates their professional accomplishments but also honors their deep-rooted passion for making a lasting difference in the CNMI.
